Thanks for the tips on helping to engage our readers on the blog. Video does help and it’s also a great place to promote others too.

      Lisa,

We agree… video is a great tool. It engages the visitor to your blog a lot more.
Love the sharing… by promoting others on your blog. Very cool!

      Thanks,

Hey Guys your post always get’s me thinking and challenges me and I love it. Things that get me out of my comfort zone move me forward. The area that I have been lacking is the video side of things and I have come up with far too many excuses. By the end of the week I’ll have a new HD video recorder and get rolling. Any recommendations on a good HD video recorder? Thanks so much for the reminder.

      Michael,

Can’t wait to see your video up and running. We know it’ll be great!
As far as recommendations go… we feel it’s best to check with those in the camera shop that know them best. That’s whose advice we follow when it comes to video equipment.

      Thanks!

Hi Michael, I highly recommend the flip camera. It is a simple camera but it works great. And downloading to YouTube is as easy as it gets.

      Karin,

Thanks for the suggestion… we have a flip camera, and we love its simplicity. We also bought a video recorder for a little more “professional look”.

      Thanks!

These days a blog is not really “just” a blog any longer. You can use the platform to build your sales funnel, use it as a content management system, build a review site or a membership site, besides all the different communication forms that you describe above.

One tip I came across suggests if you use a webcam is to use an external microphone. I tried it, and it does cut way down on the noise.

I personally like variety. I can’t sit and watch a video that is longer than 3 minutes though. I really like pictures that are relevant to the post as well. If you want to see an amazing blog with awesome content go check out http://www.doshdosh.com. I was bummed to see he stopped posting quite a while ago though.

    Regards,

I rarely see a blog without a video nowadays and it is not competitive advantage per se any more if it ever was, right? I agree, the content of the video is what gets attention or reaction.
@Mike: It is not easy to sit through a long video, but I do it often when info is exactly what I’m looking for and I am learning or being entertained all the way.

Pat & Lorna, video is challenging for me when i’m the subject. I need to find the way to overcome the shyness. But i agree the video is very powerful medium in social network.

Hi Gary, for Video Blogging tips watch Gideon Shalwick. He also covers this issue, people feeling shy or even thinking they have to look like US TV anchors, which they don’t of course.

You can always start with Camtasia or Jing videos too, record slides (screen) and narrate using your voice or pay someone to narrate your script. Hope this helps.

Video will enhance your Blog, but the written word if not done right will move people out quicker than Jackie Robinson stealing 2nd.

    Alexander,

Most definitely… one step at a time. That is another key… focus on one thing at a time. If we spread ourselves too thin, then we don’t accomplish much at all.

    Thanks,

    Hi Pat and Lorna,

Perking up your blog with visuals (and audio) is definitely important. Years ago when I worked with a couple of people now known as “gurus” we referred to images as “eye candy.” And there’s been a lot of research on the topic of visuals, which show that people’s eyes are drawn to them immediately. It actually does increase interest immediately.

Really great tips. I always add graphics or pictures, sometimes video, but I’ve never added audio to my blog. I used to have audio on my main site but took it down about a year ago. I meant to redo it, freshen it up, but never got back to it. So there’s no audio anywhere on any of my virtual real estate.

    Thanks for the reminder!

      Deb,

Cool name… “eye candy”. And quite often people do take a look at things that catch their eye. So eye candy is a good thing. We find that with visuals and audio (video) we don’t necessarily use any audio only in our posts. It’s more fun to have both the audio and visuals together.

      Thanks,

A variety of media types helps make a site come to life. It removes the sometimes sterile feel of “newsprint” and makes it more interactive. Great tips as usual! Speaking of interactive, what plugin or site code did you use to do the poll?

This can be precisely the variation concerning the key popular media and websites. The articles or blog posts are well published and not corrected by an editor was. Which is the purpose why I love to search for information sites. The comments are often extremely authentic, we could all use a lot more fun reading. Make sure you go on like this, it really is really worth.

    Drew,

It does seem most people appreciate videos… probably because it combines both audio and visuals to the mix. This helps to engage the viewer a lot more than just reading something. And we totally agree… it’s a great tool for teaching.

    Thanks,

I have used video from time to time. I love to do video tutorials. The thing that I need to get over is video of myself. I have done some videos like this, but I need to step it up. I just bought a great little Sony Handycam. Really for the price of a Flip cam, you can pick up a great little HD video camera that has much better quality. The prices of these kinds of things have gotten very reasonable. I loved the Handycam so much, I went back and got one for my son. 🙂
Great, informative post Pat & Lorna!

      Wendy,

Videos are a great way to communicate with people who visit your blog. Visuals really make things easier to understand for your readers… and it’s cool that we can get great video equipment for a small investment.

      Thanks,

    Hey Pat & Lorna,
Thanks for reinforcing that adding different types of blog posts is a good idea. I have personally not added video to my blog yet but I think I figured out why. I don’t like watching videos! I prefer reading for learning and for pleasure so I have naturally made the majority of my blog posts written. However, I know that people learn in different ways and I will meet the needs of my blog visitors much better by varying the ways in which I share information. I have previously produced podcasts and am familiar with the power of multimedia so I really must buckle down and make it a point THIS WEEK to add at least 2 videos to my site. Just because I prefer to read doesn’t mean everyone else does. Thanks for your leadership. I hope you have a POWERFUL week! Allegra

      Allegra,

It’s true… we do tend to make content in the same format we like to consume content. We just need to remind ourselves that others may not be able to connect to information in that format.

      Thanks for pointing that out…

Producing videos is not one of the topics we have tutorials on at the moment. It will definitely be something we’ll look into in the future.

Great info. Posts without so much as a picture are less dynamic and I find that I almost have less interest in reading them.

Each of our readers come for different reasons, but they come back because of the experience. What experience do people feel when they come to your website? (Kind of a question for other readers) lol

It is important that we pay attention to language we used and imagery within out sites. Are we drawing more people in or giving them nothing to care about.

    Have a great day!

    Joe
