    Pat and Lorna,

    Great advice on using Twitter!

I have been using Twitter and have had some great success with
connecting with other network marketers and generating leads
for my business and marketing system.

A great option is the Twitter app available for my Smartphone. I am
able to send out Tweets when I am away for my computer.

    Thanks for the info!!

    Have a great day,

hey Guys – nice article – must admit to a love hate thing with Twitter! i like the idea of 80 – 20 – actually with facebook its more like 95% social and 5% business related.

The quality of any social networking site is related to the degree of dialogue and opportunity for reciprocation – personally I refuse to ever send mass automated messages except via an autoresponder service to an opt in list – the value of recievinig a non business direct comment really resonates – the fact that someone would take the trouble to send a message regarding a blog etc is 100 x more memorable than a ‘hey dude check out my blah blag…” lol.

    Hey Pat and Lorna,

This is a really cool Twitter article. I had never really thought about the email vs tweeting but it does make sense that emails are a lot more intrusive and annoying than multiple short tweets each day. I also love your John Maxwell quote “People don’t care how much you know–until they know how much you care.”

This is one of the biggest social networking rules if you are using social media in business.

I also didn’t know that you could automatically have your ezine articles tweeted! Awesome.

    Have a wonderful day

I love Twitter, it has helped me reach so many people. The part I agree with most is when you said Social media is 80% social and 20% informative. Many people including myself can take a lesson or two here. So many people only tweet business related information they are not building relationships at all. Those people are missing out on the power of Twitter.

    Pat and Lorna,

Twitter is one area of marketing I am desperately trying to understand. I just can’t seem to figure out how to be in contact with people on Twitter. Like you said, the messages so away so fast, how can I possibly utilize it correctly.

Your suggestions now gives me something to go by. I use Twitter as more like a bookmarking site rather than connecting with people.

Also with the Unveiling of the Tribe Domination Coaching Program, I can’t wait to find out more about how to properly use Twitter for my business.

Thank you for sharing this valuable information.

Yes, twitter is definitely a major asset to us as internet marketers. I have to admit I really am not using it to its full potential – need to start spending more time on this!

Okay here’s another reason, or another way, really, you can use Twitter. I use it as a travel log. Don’t forget twitter was initially designed for mobile phone usage. So you can tweet where you are and what you are doing in real time.

A few years ago, just for fun, I mashed Flickr with a few Twitter services and made a real time travel log with maps and pictures.

All I had to do was take a pic with my phone and send it to Flickr, the website would automatically update maps and display my picture all in real time.

    Reason #8: Twitter is COOL!

Great post Pat and Lorna! I learned from your post and from some of the comments. With respect to emails and emailing your ‘list’ … your social media network is just like your list. In fact, a large number of the younger generation don’t even use email anymore. They consider it to be ‘snail mail’ compared to instant messaging, text messaging and keeping up with friends on social media platforms. Makes you wonder if email and auto-responders will become obsolete in favour of the ‘instant’ methods of communication.

    hi Pat and Lorna,
I love Twitter and it is definitely my most successful social media presence probably because I focused on it more!!! funny that word “focus” – um! Thanks for sharing your tips. I love John Maxwell’s words of people want to know how much you care versus how much you know. When I first came on social media, I really didn’t understand that. I thought I had to be an expert at everything but I have been learning that people really do want to know about your life and why you are doing what you do, not so much that you are an expert at everything!

    Thanks for sharing.

It really is cool… people are still social beings. No matter how much technology there is, we still like to connect with other people. People are drawn to those who they feel actually have their best interests at heart, and Twitter is a great place to get that across to others.

      Thanks!

    Hi Pat and Lorna,

This post reinforced a lot of the things I’ve observed about Twitter and given me some ideas for using it more effectively to market my book. I think the most important aspect of Twitter is the personal touch. I like the 80/20 rule, and it seems to come naturally as you build friendships with your tweeps. At least it does for me. I’ve spent time chatting and made lots of friends, and that has been the best part.

Pat&Lorna, first off I must say the video with Jimmy is so funny.

Now Twitter to me is a funny subject. I used to be on twitter all the time. I hear people talking about it how awesome it is etc etc ………..but I just couldn’t get the results I was looking for.

Maybe I started it wrong or something. I did read through your points and they make sense because that is the reason why I started on Twitter in the first place.

Perhaps it is time to really take a closer look at the whole tweeting thing again and see if I can get to a point of actually bypassing all the screaming and start building some good relationships with people.

Well I will keep an eye on you to see how the pros do it. 🙂

Re: what you pointed out about twitter vs email: I do believe that in a few years time Twitter will be used MORE than email — Twitter has So Many advantages, especially because it forces people to Get To The Point!

However, the Present Marketing tip in the article will only become truly realized if people realize that automating their online social presence will not be a successful strategy in the long run.

    • Pat & Lorna

Yes, limiting the characters people can use in their messages is great, we don’t have to read a lot of “fluff” to get to the meat of the subject. And it easy to get carried away with automation to make things quicker… and unfortunately a lot less personal.

We also use Tweet Later… it is great to have some things set up in advance. Although the best part of Twitter is connecting “live” with other people online.

    Hi Pat and Lorna,

Really excellent points! My favorite one is “People don’t care how much you know–until they know how much you care.” That is so true. I was on Twitter in the early days and it was a lot of fun but after a year or more it got so huge that I thought the friendliness and caring got lost. I was wrong. It may be harder to get into the right group of people that you can have a more personal relationship with, but once you figure it out, it’s even better than it was in the beginning. Best Wishes!

    • Pat & Lorna
      2010-12-04 @ 1:58 pm

      Deb,

It is true that a lot of people have lost the friendliness and caring aspect of their Twitter relationships and now tend to focus on what they can get from the people they connect with. That being said, there are still a large number of people who still use Twitter to build and maintain mutually beneficial relationships… and some great friendships too.
All the best in your twittering.

      Thanks!

Hello my coolest friends; thanks so much for sharing these 7 great reasons why to use twitter.

I agree that twitter is definitely a place that; if used correctly can be beneficial to you as a marketer I think 3 of the most powerful reasons you mentioned are that 1 it’s ‘present marketing’ this is huge and really gives you the ability to test different things and get instant results. 2nd in my opinion is the building of your expert status; which I believe so many people are worried about having, so this reason is definitely a great share. And the 3rd that I really see, and I’m so glad that you pointed out is to be helpful. So many marketers are missing this element, and failing with twitter and other social media because they are not adding value and being helpful.

This is an awesome post my friends; thanks again for sharing.

    Hi there Pat and Lorna,
I am not a big Twitter fan, but your post has awakened more of an interest for sure.
I like that “instant” message…that it appeals to people on the move so to speak.

Must look into it with a little more enthusiasm in the future.

Thanks for reminding me about the resources that Twitter offers.

    Best wishes

    Hey Pat, Hey Lorna,
I love the way you emphasize the ‘social mix’ here and reitertate the 80-20 rule. Yes, social media, social networking is first and foremost about exactly that … networking … through interacting and asking the right questions, you get to offer help to the people who want it, and just hang out and have a laugh with everyone else. It’s so important that people understand that it is about people first, business second. Relationships first, business cards second. I think so many people underestimate the power of social media marketing because they just want to wade in ‘boots and all’ and start ‘selling’. What are your thoughts around that?
Great post, thanks for posting 🙂

    • Pat & Lorna
      2011-02-26 @ 11:37 am

      Mandy,

We totally agree. Too often we see people who do not develop the relationships, and figure that since there are so many people on the social media sites they’ll be able to make a ton of money just by selling to them. But that’s not what it’s about. People will buy from people they know, like and trust; and they won’t put a lot of trust in someone who’s in it just for the sales.

Also, we think it’s a shame on how many amazing relationships these “salespeople” miss out on by pushing their wares from the get-go.

      Thanks so much!

    Hi Pat and Lorna,
I think that Twitter is another place where you can waste a lot of time if you don’t know how to use it for marketing. Many people expect to just tweet some random things thinking they will get leads to their business.
But, as John Maxwell said in that quotation, interacting with people and offering your help is really what Twitter is all about. I see many Twitter accounts whose owners just auto-tweet hundreds of things per hour… I totally disagree with that kind of stuff.
Thanks for the great article, it has been a pleasure reading it,
    George

Thanks for the great tips on Twitter. I believe a balance between automating and actively engaging is the best way to go with Twitter. And it’s primarily about connecting with others and promoting them ahead of ourselves. When we do this at a ratio of 12 (them) to 1 (us), it will result in a lot of value for both parties, as per guru Chris Brogan.

    Hi Pat and Lorna,

Thank you for this article. I’m new to twitter and quite honestly I didn’t get it at first. When a started to get followers, there seemed to be a lot of ‘mini-posts” that didn’t make sense. After awhile, it started to come together and I realized there is legitimate tweeting and spammy tweeting. Some people use tricks to push hundreds of ads through and I cannot see the sense in how that is going to do anything for their business.

Your tweet site is great and clean and it has really good pointers to good content. Since the two of you are “experts” in social media, you were one of the first I added to follow, even though I didn’t know what I was doing and I use your site as a model of how Twitter is properly used to enhance the “social” in our marketing. Good stuff!

Every point that you make about Twitter is right on point! Twitter is a highly effective and useful tool, and now with Google’s new algorithum “Panda”, it is so extrememly important to gain search ranking. Social media now plays a very important role in ranking. If you have a valid and insightful account it will also give you authority, which is so important to credibility with you website.
